Despite being known rivals in sports and academics, Indiana University and Purdue University were able to come together through the city of Indianapolis to create an amalgamation of their universities in the heart of the city: Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). With the beautiful city of Indianapolis being the foundation of IUPUI, the campus has been able to step out of the shadow of its parent schools’ through the creation of their own tradition that rivals the Indiana University Little 500 and Purdue University Grand Prix: the Regatta. Through utilizing one of Indianapolis’ signature features with the downtown canal located in our own backyard, IUPUI has been able to differentiate themselves from the pack to provide a signature campus tradition that promotes school pride in students, staff, and faculty while providing an experience that fills the sidewalks and the waters of the canal with the IUPUI nation and the Indianapolis community.
Since its creation in 2009, the Regatta Steering Committee and IUPUI Alumni Relations have collaborated each year to create IUPUI’s premiere event. The IUPUI Regatta consists of a half-mile canoe relay competition involving teams of up to six IUPUI students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The race will take place between the Indiana State Museum and Military Park, with the start being at Blackford Street and the exchange point in the Ohio Street Basin. For years, the Regatta has been a symbol of unity by drawing IUPUI Alumni and students from across all majors together to fill the sidewalks and the waters of the canal. IUPUI Jaguars are able to exemplify the energy our urban campus brings during the Regatta with our unified spirit of power and confidence showcasing our school pride, building long-lasting friendships, and kicking off a new academic school year. The Regatta even offers an opportunity for the Greater Indianapolis community to interact with the Jaguar Nation by cheering on the participants in the star attraction: the rowing competition.
Whether you are an Indiana University Alumni, Purdue University Alumni, an IUPUI alumni, or a member of the community the IUPUI Regatta welcomes ALL Indiana to join in the various activities on the canal such as our live entertainment from IUPUI organizations and local community bands, an Arts & Culture Fair, food and marketplace vendors, our kid zone and inflatables, networking, and spectating our rowing competition and various contests.
