Why it's important
- Sexually transmitted infections (STIs): Young adults (15-24) account for half of new cases (CDC). Use condoms or other barrier methods, get tested regularly, and discuss your status openly with current and new partners prior to any sexual activity.
- Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV): 19% of new diagnoses are in ages 13-24 (CDC). Protect yourself with condoms, regular testing, and PrEP.
- Unintended pregnancy: Use birth control methods like pills, IUDs, or the Depo-Provera shot to lower the chance of pregnancy. While birth control helps prevent pregnancy, it does not offer protection against STIs or HIV—using condoms is still important.
Health practices
Condom use
Condoms are incredibly effective when used correctly and consistently. They can reduce the risk of STI transmission and lower chances of pregnancy.
Products, like condoms, are free for IU Indy students.

Regular testing
Regular STI and HIV testing are crucial for early detection and treatment. Screening for STI should be done annually for most sexually active college students. More frequent testing (every 3-6 months) is recommended for those with new or multiple partners. Campus Health provides STI testing and free HIV testing by appointment, and Know Your Status monthly testing events provide free HIV and Hepatitis C testing.

Vaccinations
One of the most important things you can do to safeguard your health is stay current on your vaccinations. The HPV vaccine series is recommended for college students to prevent HPV-related cancers and genital warts (ACHA)

Healthy communication
Talk openly and honestly with your partners about your likes, dislikes, sexual health, and boundaries. If something is unclear, don't hesitate to ask questions. This ensures that everyone is on the same page. Mutual respect and consent are key to healthy relationships.
